Skin Check: Early Detection of Melanoma Saves Lives

As we head into summer, we want to start the season with an important reminder – early detection is key when it comes to effectively treating skin cancers, including melanoma.

Melanoma is one of the most serious forms of skin cancer, but when caught early, it’s highly treatable. That’s why performing regular self-exams and scheduling your annual full-body skin check with a dermatologist is so important. Our providers are specially trained to identify skin cancers at their earliest—and most treatable—stages. Many types of skin cancer, including some melanomas, can be treated right in the office, especially when found early.

The ABCDEs of Detecting Melanoma

When examining your skin, follow these five simple criteria to help identify suspicious spots that may need further evaluation:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole or spot does not match the other. Melanomas often have an irregular shape.

  • B – Border: Look for edges that are ragged, blurred, or notched. Healthy moles usually have smooth, even borders.

  • C – Color: Be cautious of spots with uneven coloring or multiple colors (shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue).

  • D – Diameter: Watch for spots larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), although melanomas can be smaller.

  • E – Evolving: This is one of the most important signs—any change in size, shape, color, elevation, or another trait, or a new symptom such as bleeding, itching, or crusting.

Why Early Detection Matters

Melanoma can spread quickly to other parts of the body if not caught early. Fortunately, when detected at an early stage, the survival rate is extremely high—up to 99%. This underscores the importance of checking your skin monthly and staying consistent with annual dermatologist visits.
